OQE 2013: Tie-breaker update
December 14, 2013
Norway women beat Germany while USA men defeated Korea in Saturday's tie-breaker games to keep their Olympic hopes alive at the World Curling Federation's Olympic Qualification Event in Fuessen, Germany.
The Norwegian women came from behind to seal their win with single steals in the eighth and tenth ends for a 5-4 win, while the USA men led from the start, scoring two in the first end on their way to a 7-5 win.
Norway now face the loser of the 1v2 game between China and Japan while the USA men will face a play-off against the loser of the men’s 1v2 game between Germany and the Czech Republic.
The winners of the 1v2 play-offs and then the winners of the play-offs between the losing 1v2 teams against the third placed teams will qualify for the last two remaining men’s and women’s places in the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games curling competition line-up.
After her win, Norway's skip Marianne Roervik said: "I'm very, very happy. They played really well and it was a really tight game that came down to the last rock." Looking forward to her last challenge she said: "We know the job's not done yet but we're going out with everything to win and nothing to lose."
Meanwhile, the USA men were also celebrating. Third player Jeff Isaacson said: "We started the week very shaky and just made mistake after mistake. As the week’s gone on we’ve got a lot better handle with the rocks and ice. We’ve been facing at least five elimination games that we’ve had to win and we’re responding pretty well to it."
